Air Fryer Spring Rolls: Easy Recipe

This spring rolls air fryer recipe is one of my favorite Asian recipes.

I had so much fun preparing them but eating them even more!

Spring rolls are crispy finger foods from Chinese cuisine which have won a place in the hearts of all of us over the years.

Delicious, tasty, and enclosed in a crispy fried pastry, spring rolls are truly irresistible.

Chinese spring rolls, originally served on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, take their name from the period in which this event falls: Spring.

The typical filling of these rolls is minced meat and crispy vegetables such as carrots, savoy cabbage, and soy sprouts, all flavored with fresh spring onion.

But you can easily make different versions (including vegan and vegetarian) by substituting a few ingredients.

Why Is This Recipe The Best?

They’re easy to make: They look difficult, but it’s a really easy recipe to make. Even closing them isn’t too much of a task!

They are delicious: Delicious, crispy spring rolls – who doesn’t love them?

You can cook them 3 ways: Air fryer recipe, fried or baked.

Below, I explain all 3 cooking methods.

The best way, in my opinion, is cooking them in the air fryer.

The result is super crispy with just a little oil and no mess in the kitchen.

What Goes In The Spring Rolls? Complete List of Ingredients:

Spring roll pastry: Traditional spring roll wrappers are thin sheets made from a dough of wheat flour, salt, water, and oil.

You can find it in all Asian supermarkets and regular grocery stores.

Vegetables: I use napa cabbage, carrot, and shiitake mushrooms for my spring rolls.

But you can be creative with whatever vegetables you like, such as bean sprouts, bell peppers, etc.

Ginger & Garlic: Ginger and garlic can never be missing when I cook Asian.

They give the dish a special flavor and are slightly spicy.

Spring onion: It should never be missing from spring rolls. It gives them a fresh flavor.

Soy sauce: Combines all the ingredients.

Be sure to use a low-sodium soy sauce to control the saltiness level.

How To Make The Spring Roll Filling – Vegetable Spring Rolls

As I said above, you can indulge yourself in the filling.

You can create spring rolls with meat vegetarian or even vegan.

My delicious filling is very simple and vegetarian.

I use cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, and spring onions as vegetables.

Brown the minced garlic and ginger with a spoonful of olive oil in a wok or non-stick frying pan.

After that, add the cabbage, carrots, and mushrooms that I previously cut into julienne, add the soy sauce, and let them cook for about a couple of minutes.

The result should always be crispy.

Add the spring onion raw and cook the rice noodles. Then, put the filling to cool in a large bowl.

How To Fold And Assemble

The closing of the spring rolls is very similar to that of a burrito.

First, place a dough sheet on your work flat surface with one corner facing you.

About 5 cm from the corner form a strip of filling about 7cm long.

Raise the corner to cover the filling.

Fold the two side corners toward the center.

Roll the roll up tightly. When you are almost at the end, wet the opposite top corner with a little egg, which will seal the roll well.

Variations

The fillings: The most traditional variations are vegetarian spring rolls stuffed only with vegetables or those with vegetables and pork ground.

Then there are Italian-style spring rolls, alongside or instead of the typically oriental vegetables; other, more “local” ones are used, such as zucchini, peppers, and leeks.

Possible fillings include fish and shellfish, such as salmon and shrimp, possibly combined with vegetables.

Rice paper rolls: Soak two sheets of rice paper in warm water until softening. 

Dry them with a tea towel.

Place the filling in the middle and bottom of one of the two sheets, then fold the sides of the sheet toward the center, then the bottom.

Roll up then and form the roll. 

Sweet spring rolls: I assure you they are delicious.

I made mini spring rolls with banana and Nutella, but you can also add peanut butter and dark chocolate.

Tips & Tricks To Make This Spring Roll Recipe

  • We recommend using the Wok to prepare the filling of the spring rolls because it can cook the vegetables at the right point, giving them that typical flavor deriving from stir-frying.
  • Don’t overfill them, as it will be difficult to close them.
  • Always place them in a single layer in the air fryer.

What To Serve With Spring Rolls

These spring rolls are perfect for an appetizer or easy snack!

They are also a perfect starter for an Asian-themed dinner.

Different Ways To Cook Springrolls

How To Make Deep-Fried Spring Rolls

To fry spring rolls, fill a small pot (which requires less oil) with oil to a depth of 5- 7 inches.

Heat the oil slowly over medium-high heat until it reaches 325 degrees F.

Gently add the spring rolls one at a time.

Carefully roll them in the oil so they cook evenly until golden brown at medium heat, then transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.

How To Bake Spring Rolls 

To bake, place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and brush them with oil.

Bake for about 20 minutes in a ventilated oven preheated to 180 degrees C. (350 F)

Leftover Spring rolls: How To Store

You can store them uncooked in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Be careful and do not overlap them because they may stick.

Freeze The Spring Rolls

You can freeze these homemade spring rolls on the tray to harden.

Transfer them to a ziplock bag when they are frozen for future use.

How do you reheat leftover spring rolls?

You can reheat them in an air fryer. Do not microwave.

Air fry in a preheated air fryer for 3-4 minutes (375 degrees F).

What Is The Difference Between Spring Rolls And Egg Rolls

The biggest difference between spring rolls and egg rolls is the dough they are made of. Spring rolls are wrapped in flour or rice paper wrappers, while egg rolls are wrapped in a thicker, crispier wrapper dipped in eggs. 

Do I need to thaw the frozen spring rolls before air frying?

No, when I make spring rolls at home, I always make many of them and then freeze them. My advice is not to thaw them because they might get soggy.

Should I preheat the air fryer?

Yes, to have more even cooking.

Ingredients

  • 1 Package of Spring roll pastry
  • Half a head of cabbage
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 2 Carrots
  • 1 Piece of ginger
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 Tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 10 Mushrooms
  • 1 Tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 ounces rice noodles

Instructions

  1. First we prepare the filling.
  2. Chop or mince garlic and ginger. Cut the cabbage and carrots into strips. Wash the mushrooms and cut them into small pieces.
  3. In a wok or non-stick frying pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil and brown the garlic and ginger, previously minced, for a couple of minutes.
  4. Add the mushrooms and let them cook for about 3 minutes. When they have softenedm add the cabbage and soy sauce and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the carrot and stir-fry for about a minute. Seasoning with salt and pepper.
  6. Pass the vegetables into a bowl, and add the raw cut spring onion slices, and let cool.
  7. Cook the rice noodles as indicated on the package. When they are ready cut them into chunks and add them to the filling.
  8. Open the packet of rolls sheets and cover with a damp towel so they don't dry out.
  9. When the filling is at room temperature, you can start assembling the rolls. Whisk an egg that will be used to close the spring rolls.
  10. Take a sheet and place it on a shelf, arranged with one corner facing you. Place 1 tablespoons of filling about 2 inches from the nearest corner, forming a strip about 7 inches long. Fold the corner so that it covers the filling, fold the two side corners toward the center. Roll up the rolls and when you are almost at the end, wet your finger egg or use a pastry brush and run it along the corner in front of you. Seal the roll well.
  11. As you prepare them, arrange the rolls on a tray with the closure facing down.
  12. Place the rolls in the air fryer basket of your air fryer preheated to 200°C (400 degrees f) in a single layer. With a brush, brush the rolls with olive oil or use a cooking spray and cook for about 8 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking.
  13. Now you can remove them from the basket and serve this crispy spring rolls with sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce.

Try making thai sweet chili sauce at home. It is my favorite dipping sauce to be served with spring rolls!
