Best Tips to Make Overnight Oats

Here’s what I’ve learned after making overnight oats recipes hundreds of times (yes, I’ve had a few soggy disasters too).

  • Use Rolled Oats, Always : Old-fashioned rolled oats are perfect for overnight oats. They soften overnight but still have a bit of bite. Quick oats turn mushy, and steel-cut oats stay too firm unless you cook them first.
  • Start with the Right Ratio: The base formula is simple: 1 part oats to 1 part milk (or any plant-based milk).
  • Add Something Creamy: For creaminess mix in a spoonful of Greek yogurt, chia seeds, or nut butter. These give your oats more body — and a nice boost of protein and healthy fats too.
  • Sweeten Lightly: A bit of honey or maple syrup, or even mashed banana, adds just enough sweetness.
  • Mix Everything Well: Before you pop your jar or container in the fridge, give it a good stir so every oat gets coated.
  • Let Them Chill Long Enough: You’ll need at least 4 hours, but overnight is best.
  • Add Toppings in the Morning: Save your toppings for just before eating. Things like nuts, granola, or fresh fruit taste so much better when added at the end.
  • Store Them Properly: Overnight oats keep for about 4–5 days in the fridge. Mason jars work great.
